Travel Methods
Perhaps you have begun to think in terms of doing something personally for the environment. You already recycle, but you want to do more. If that is the case, you may want to look into some alternative travel methods that will allow you to decrease your consumption of fossil fuels. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking.
If you live within a reasonable distance from your work, you may want to look into the idea of taking a bike to work. More and more people are choosing this option as a way of cutting their gasoline consumption. Of course, this will mean allowing extra time to get to and from work, having a means of dressing once you arrive at your workplace, and also making sure you can plan a route that is safe. Many people who choose travel methods such as bicycling find that once they begin they never want to go back.
If biking is not a good option for you, then public transportation might be among the travel methods you will consider. Even if you do not live in a large city, you may find that your town is running at least a bus system. Check into the schedules; learn where the stops are in relation to your home and your place of work. You may find that travel methods such as this can be used not only on weekdays, but also for trips to recreational events on the weekends.
If your town does not have any type of public transportation, there is always the option of starting a car pool. If you have neighbors that work in the same section of town that you do, then ride together. You can switch off who will drive each week, so everyone has the chance to be both passenger and driver. Travel methods such as this help to keep a few cars off the road and will also give you the chance to get to know one another a little better.
Alternative travel methods and their availability vary from one community to the next. Investigate what travel methods are currently in place around your town and give them a try. You may soon be so happy with the results that you won't even miss taking your car every where you go.
